With the former site as the core cultural lineage, the Sugar Factory Museum is not only a vessel for commercial and cultural display, but also a carrier of regional emotions and memories.
At the peak of sugar production, Zhuhai's sugar cane forests covered an area of more than 300,000 mu. In the face of past memories, some irrational qualities are needed to retain the emotional value of the space. The unique proportions and sequential relationships of the sugar cane forest are translated into the columns in the space, and the visual sense of the whole hall is open.
Using vertical traffic as a path to wander, the staircase in the hall is a symbolic structure that pays homage to the staircase of the old sugar factory.
The human activity here creates a sense of drama, and the many perspectives of looking and being looked at are presented, adding to the interest of the space. From a macro perspective, the entire staircase façade creates an end view, while isolating the clutter of the street frontage outside.
In a mixed-use living area with sugar culture at its core, its presence inspires people to participate in the future development and changes from a variety of perspectives.
The second and third floors are connected by a bridge across the main hall, linking the different functional spaces. In the permanent exhibition hall on the first floor, sugar-making machines and old objects bearing the mark of the past show their rugged industrial quality, juxtaposing with the new space as if it were a reincarnation. The sub-pavilions are flexible and versatile enough to grow with the city's future. The inauguration of the Sugar Factory Museum is a renewal and a legacy. The abandoned buildings of the industrial era need to be reused and upgraded into new spaces of value.
