The book "Prison Reform" analyses various issues surrounding the Hong Kong prison system and raises the different problems faced by prisoners, comparing them to the “UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners" (the Nelson Mandela Rules) in an attempt to propose suggestions for improving the Hong Kong prison system.
For a long time, the rights of prisoners have been easily ignored by mainstream society, yet prisoners are still members of society and their basic rights should be equally respected.
"It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones." - Nelson Mandela
This book targets the general public and aims to increase social awareness through publishing. The design started by using comparison, with the cover and back cover listing the different treatments between the two systems, evoking readers' personal feelings. The text is covered by rectangular prison bars, indicating the problems faced by prisoners. The bar-shaped graphics are used throughout the layout and paper selection, with the colours chosen from the red of the Hong Kong SAR flag and the blue of the United Nations logo. The entire design brings out the core idea of comparing the two systems from different perspectives.
The design presents complex issues in a simple and straightforward manner, different from the typical dark design approach for prison-themed books. It leads readers to accept these social issues through rational and discussion-based methods, which have been ignored but always existed.
