Shelter Inclusive Place Copal is an indoor and outdoor playground where children can play regardless of the weather in Yamagata City, Japan. It was conceived as a playground open to all children, regardless of whether they have disabilities, nationality, or differences in home environment.
The site is located in an area rich in nature, with the Zao mountain range close at hand and the surrounding rural scenery spreading out. The roof, which stretches like clouds in harmony with the beautiful mountain range, creates an appearance that is integrated with the surrounding countryside.
When you enter the entrance, the symbolic wooden dome of the gymnasium welcomes visitors, and it is a space where you can feel the state of children exercising and holding events.
Centering on a space connected by a slope, various spaces with different ceiling heights and widths are created. Just as a slope becomes a slope that even children who do not use a wheelchair want to run on, an idea that supports one individual with a disability can lead to play and learning for other people as well. I feel that I can fundamentally rethink each and every conventional element of architecture.
The design was designed with the intention of creating an “inclusive” place that everyone can play together, regardless of whether they have a disability.
In this project, we adopted the "BTO method" based on the "PFI method", and the entire SPC team including construction, design, operation, and maintenance shared the concept from the very beginning of the design and examined proposals. advanced. During the design and construction period, experts, local residents, SPC members, and city hall officials gathered to discuss room layout, safety, and inclusive spaces. We could realize an architecture that integrates.
