EcoQuest is a localised communication design project that reimagines the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Melburnians through a playful and emotionally resonant experience. The design process began with researching Melbourne’s native species, landmarks, and community sustainability initiatives, identifying opportunities to align local stories with global goals.

A new visual identity system was developed, replacing the original SDGs icons with illustrated characters inspired by local flora and fauna. This created an approachable and relatable language that maintained the SDGs’ core meaning while strengthening emotional engagement. The system was applied to an interactive tabletop game, encouraging players to make choices, solve challenges, and reflect on sustainability actions within familiar contexts.

EcoQuest’s design strategy centered around accessibility, emotional connection, and place-based learning. Gameplay elements such as action cards, quiz questions, and event scenarios were crafted to highlight real-world initiatives, helping players connect abstract goals to tangible experiences. The project also integrated elements of storytelling and gamification to sustain engagement and deepen understanding.

Showcased at community events and supported by RMIT University, EcoQuest successfully invited participants of different ages and backgrounds to explore sustainability in a local, playful, and collaborative way.
