In a city as densely populated as Hong Kong, breathing space is critical to our social well-being, the Harbour Wave invites people to enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbour. The Harbour Wave is an immersive art and lighting pavilion that floats between the breakwater of East Coast Park Precinct (ECP) and the sky above. While the undulating form seamlessly blends into the waves of the harbour, the day and night lights of Hong Kong skyline are materialised into a gradient of vibrant colours that creates a mesmerizing dynamic at the waterfront, fostering a new iconic landmark at the heart of the city. With the romantic harbour sunset in the backdrop, the Harbour Wave devises a surreal polychromatic effect through an everchanging lighting spectacle that submerges visitors in a dreamy wave of motion and colour.

Zooming into the 200 square metre floating canopy, over 15,000 nos. of recycled plastic (rPET) ropes of different colours are used in the composition, which demonstrate that beautiful art can be made from recycled plastic. Most plastic wastes are discarded to landfills or washed into the harbour. Through the choice of materials, ARTA Architects hopes to promote a more sustainable lifestyle and preserve the beautiful waterfront of Victoria Harbour. Currently, “Harbour Wave 2.0” inherits the original steel structure from “Harbour Wave 1.0”, while the 30,000 nos. of plastic bottle caps are replaced with over 15,000 nos. of recycled plastic (rPET) ropes. The Harbour Wave continues the sustainable quest of the ARTA Architects from recycle, reuse to repurpose, and refurbish.
