The history of Taiwan is inseparable from fishing, and the development of Keelung is more closely related to it and fishing ports. Keelung Ciao: Sailing to the Island of Future is based on Chen-Pin, the largest fishing port in Taiwan in the past, and uses art as a medium to show the rise and fall of fisheries in northern Taiwan, to get to know Keelung’s face with audiences of different ages and backgrounds, re-look at Taiwan we live in, where the culture of an island country, and its present, past and future. As artistic action that imagines the future of maritime culture in Keelung and of harbors, 2022 Keelung Ciao takes the theme Sailing to the Island of Future, linking chronology with locales and gathers 17 artists and 17 works. Through the dynamic and organic integration of local craftspeople and residents, we jointly trace the history and the collective memory of the Chen-Pin fishing port to explore possible futures for the ports of Keelung. The curated content is not limited to elaborating cultural images through visuals and installations, but further incorporates literature, food, and port architecture into the creation. All works are created and collaborated locally, allowing the public to not only vistit an exhibition, but understand the port culture through rich sensory experience like taste, hearing, touch, and smell, to re-examine the meaning of ocean sustainability.
