“tien faˊ” is the Hakka pronunciation for “indigo flower,” and indigo is the symbolic color of the Hakka. With new interpretation of values, new language of design and new perspective of viewing, this publication is set out to unshackle the stereotypes in society and the long-time feeling of being “out of place” that has been binding the Hakka.

The overall content can be divided into cover themes, special issues and regular columns, focusing on the Hakka people’s current life. When the first issue was published, it attracted great attention from all circles. Although the publication focuses on the Hakka, a minority in Taiwan, it has resonated and favored by many non-Hakka readers, due to its rich themes, unique content and layout design that takes into account both readability and artiness.

In 2022, the "Special Project" of the magazine " tien faˊ" differed from previous editions in its focus on interactive gifts with a brand-new design, rather than storytelling about Hakka culture through different themes. Each issue invited a designer/artist with Hakka heritage to explore childhood memories, impressions of their hometown, and the Hakka spirit. The aim was to infuse interesting gifts with Hakka imagery, allowing readers to experience the classic and evolving Hakka spirit through play.

The sticker book, designed by LiJunci, encouraged readers to embrace appropriate labels. Designer LiMeiyu created Handkerchief printed with patterns inspired by Hakka food. Illustrator Nic and paper artist HongXinfu portrayed Hakka transplants returning home by depicting how twirling paper flowers land. PiliWu-Design transformed the worship flower into year-end keepsakes with blessing.
