This book tells a historical narrative of Yangshuo Sugar Refinery, the predecessor of the famous resort hotel Yangshuo Sugar House. Artist Chuanhong LIU took a time-traveling narrative approach and created a series of corresponding oil paintings. As sugar served as war supplies during the turbulent times, the Sugar Refinery naturally turned into a vital supply reserve, where touching stories of all those fighting for their lives were staged in the picturesque Lijiang River. After all these years, the century-old Yangshuo Sugar Refinery has made a splendid transformation, directed by the famous architect Gong DONG. The characters, places, and times in the book are presented in a documentary manner. During the process, we happened to get a century-old sugar-making machine, which was successfully repaired, and hereby offer every reader a handmade candy. The form of boiled caramels runs through this book, starting from the cover, whose fluidity and clarity joyfully mirrors the landscape of Lijiang River. In the book, the documentary texts and oil paintings are orderly compiled, along with the new looks of the reconstructed Sugar Refinery. Architecture is a witness of time, where people’s pursuit of happiness remains without being diluted by time. The overall design of the book presents an antique touch, with the newsprint paper, kraft-paper, and plastic cover reflecting the texture of the times.
