The General's Mansion 1936 Hualien emphasizes “subtractive design”, removing walls and alleyways to create an open garden environment. The Japanese-style dormitory was transformed into a teahouse to realize “Omotenashi,” the Japanese way of hospitality. Combining a Japanese-style garden with modern landscaping and preserving the original appearance of the historic building, food and beverages are placed at the core of the design, creating an atmosphere that is lively but not noisy.
